CIVIL ENGINEERING: COMMITMENT TO STUDENT CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND CONTRIBUTING 40% TO THE NATIONAL GDP

The construction engineering industry is a vital part of the economy, facilitating the construction and development of the nation and achieving the goal of making Vietnam an industrialized country. Therefore, on average, Vietnam spends 30–40% of its GDP each year on investment in the construction of technical infrastructure, the development of industrial parks and industries, urbanization, cultural, educational, service works, etc. The demand for human resources in the construction industry is forecasted to increase by 400,000–500,000 people annually.

Civil engineering, also known as work construction engineering, is a discipline related to the construction of civil and industrial works serving people's daily lives, such as houses, apartments, hotels, warehouses, plants, etc. The process requires the management, supervision, and inspection of a work's construction.

The construction engineering industry not only generates economic benefits but also enhances infrastructure and the quality of life in the community. This is a dynamic and exciting field that contributes to the economic and social development of a country, making it suitable for individuals who are passionate about creativity and enjoy challenges.

    • What jobs can you do after graduating from the discipline of construction engineering?

Design engineer: design construction projects, including houses, bridges, roads, and technical infrastructure.

Site engineer: oversee and manage the construction process at the construction site, ensuring the progress and quality of the project.

Estimating engineer: estimate costs for construction projects, analyze, and control budgets.

Project management engineer: manage and coordinate construction projects, from planning to implementation and completion.

Construction materials engineer: research and develop construction materials, ensuring they meet technical and safety standards.

Environmental engineer: evaluate the environmental impact of construction projects and propose mitigation measures.

Survey engineer: Conduct topographic and geological surveys to collect information necessary for design and construction.

Construction maintenance engineer: inspect, maintain, and repair construction works after completion.

Furthermore, during an internship or after graduation, students may work in related fields, including construction consulting, occupational safety, or quality management.

There are basic requirements for students to study civil engineering

Background Knowledge

  • Students should be capable of solving engineering problems and comprehending the physical principles that are related to construction in mathematics and physics, engineering science of materials, mechanics, and structures.

Analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Students must possess the ability to analyze and provide solutions to complex technical problems in order to grasp knowledge during the learning process. At the same time, it is necessary to supplement planning skills with the ability to organize and plan construction projects. 

Design and software using skills

  • ICH trains students to be proficient in using design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and other simulation tools and to master the techniques of drawing and reading construction drawings.

Knowledge of construction regulations and standards

  • To secure a desirable position and advance your career, it is crucial to acquire more knowledge about the regulations, standards, and laws related to construction, right from your school days. 

Communication Skills

  • Students will acquire the capacity to present ideas and plans clearly and persuasively, work in teams, and communicate with project members and stakeholders effectively. Furthermore, they will gain an understanding of project management methods and the ability to lead a team during the construction process.
